One Month,
Four Themes ,
Balance through
Remote Work

Through shared rituals and curated experiences, you’ll learn to balance productivity with presence. Each week of this popup we invite you into a living theme from Japanese wisdom;
Ma (space), Mujo (impermanence),
Wa (harmony), and Kansha (gratitude).

This program is made for you if …

  • You’re working remotely and want more balance
  • You crave community—but not a party hostel
  • You’re curious about Japan’s spiritual roots
  • You want your work to feel aligned with your life

Week 1

間 (Ma)
Space / Pause

Ma is the sacred pause—the space between actions. We’ll explore how to create intentional breaks in our schedules, design our workdays with breathing room, and appreciate silence as a source of power.

Week 2

無常 (Mujō)
Impermanence

Nothing lasts forever and that is what’s beautiful. Through Mujo, we’ll learn how to let go of perfectionism, embrace change, and build resilience into the way we work and live. Fluidity becomes strength.

Week 3

和 (Wa)
Harmony

Wa is the Japanese ideal of social harmony. This week focuses on community, collaboration, and interpersonal
balance : resolve friction gently, and create emotionally safe spaces.

Week 4

感謝 (Kansha)
Gratitude

Kansha is the act of connecting to gratitude. Giving thanks for others, for nature, for yourself.
This final week centers reflection,
celebration, and forward momentum as we close the program with appreciation and clarity.

Why Kotohira?

Nestled in the heart of Shikoku, this small town offers the best of rural Japan:
a welcoming local community, sacred sites like Konpira Shrine, rolling hills and udon you’ll dream about.
It’s peaceful, walkable, and just a short train ride from Takamatsu or Osaka.

Home for the Month
Kotori Coworking & Hostel

Kotori and Alt_ are built on the same values : community, creativity, and meaningful connections with local culture. Tucked away in the historic town, Kotori is a thoughtfully restored Japanese inn with the essentials for remote work and slow living. Steps away, you’ll find local markets, ancient shrines, and the kind of rhythm that invites reflection, focus, and presence.

The space is human-scale, rooted in local culture, and designed for intentional travelers who value connection over convenience. Together, we’re creating a space to live, learn, and grow as individuals and as a community.

Why This Program?

Remote work often slides into 12-hour grind cycles and creeping burnout. Our one-month Kotohira residency pairs a productive work environment with mindfulness practices drawn from Japanese Zen and buddhism. Rural Shikoku’s slower cadence, clean air, and temple-lined trails let you focus better than any city hub, while our community-first events ensure you’re never hustling alone. Leave with deliverables ticked off, balance restored, and a tight-knit crew you’ll keep in your circle forever.

Emphasis on Human Connection

At Alt_Coliving and Kotori, we prioritize community first. Our pop-up reflects this value by creating a space where connections flourish, both within the group and with the local culture.
The local town of Kotohira is full of kind-hearted people very open to connecting with visiting nomads, and we make sure you have every opportunity to connect with them!
